I am the daughter of a World War Ii vet who survived the Battle of the Bulge and three months in a German prison camp. I was married for 25 years to a Vietnam Vet..and lately all I can do is cry. When vets came home from Vietnem, they were ridiculed and taunted..it was not until the Persian Gulf war that people began to give veterans the respect they were due. Now the focus is finally on the families who also sacrifice for their countries..and I am once again thinking..how nice..but we were overlooked yet again! My now ex-husband was destroyed by his service in Vietnam. For 25 years we fought that war..long after it was over..and lost the battle..just as our country did. He succumbed to alcohol..the victim of endless nightmares. My children fought the Vietnam war as well..and have now been fatherless for 10 years. The VA has never recognized his disability as war related, even though countless psychological studies has said that it is..so my children WHO ARE VETERANS too, never qualified for educational benefits..meaning I had to work as many as 5 jobs at a time to put them through college. I am positive our family is not the only one in this situation. I am thrilled that the families of military servicemen and women are now being honored...but again feel that sense of sorrow that children of abuse feel when moved to foster care..you do not realize how bad it is until you see how good someone else has it. It has been a nightmare for my children.. It has been written that NO WAR IS OVER UNTIL THE LAST VETERAN WHO FOUGHT IN IT HAS DiED...my children and I fought the VIetnam war as well...me for 28 years..them..for their entire lives. Their Dad is as dead to them as if he had never returned from war. He was truly lost on that battlefield. Thank you for reading through this..and for honoring the families of current military personnel who are sacrificing each day...but please try to remember those families who continue to suffer the losses of other wars and "military actions"...many are still fighting those battles.
