I think it's was really special that Tom Hanks was able to go to the service. Major Winters was an outstanding person. For someone who didn't like be refured to as a "hero" that's exactly what him and his men were and always will be.

I attended the memorial service for Major Winters and it was such a wonderful tribute to him. I had the pleasure of meeting him and his wife Ethel a few years ago with my son at one of his talks. My son was so honored to have meet him ! My son who is now twenty went with to the service and to see him cry was unheard of to me and to know that someone his age could see the hero he was, it was emotional. And to see Tom Hanks there was so nice, knowing that someone as well known as him could be there and not take away the reason we were all there, and for Tom to be as discrete as you were it really shows what kind of man you are ! Kudos to you !

I was privileged to attend the memorial for Major Winters and was able to meet his dear wife, Ethel. It was a pleasant surprise to me that Mr. Hanks was at the service and was especially impressed that he attended as a person honoring Major Winters, not as a celebrity. I was also able to meet Mr. Hanks and thank him for making the mini-series that honored all of these men. As one of the daughters of Robert(Popeye) Wynn, I told Mr. Hanks that I wished he could have known him and his response was, "I feel like I already do." What a wonderful thing to say!
