Tom Hanks gets his first Tony nomination

May 01, 2013 - 0 comment

We are happy to announce that Tom Hanks is among the nominees for Best Performance By An Actor in a Leading Role in a Play at the Tony Awards for his performance in the play Lucky Guy.
This nomination was predicted by a number of experts, including Martin Denton (NY Theatre), Michael Musto (Village Voice), Tom O'Neil (Gold Derby), Paul Sheehan (Gold Derby), David Sheward (Back Stage), Doug Strassler (NY Press), Matt Windman (amNY) and Wayman Wong (NY Daily News), who also think there's a good chance he'll take the trophy home.
With the exception of Broadway debutant Tom Hanks, the acting categories were mostly filled by established theater creatures such as Laurie Metcalf, Amy Morton, Laura Osnes, Nathan Lane, Tracy Letts, David Hyde Pierce and Kristine Nielsen.

The other contenders in the category Best Actor in a Play are Nathan Lane (The Nance), David Hyde Pierce (Vanya and Sonya and Masha and Spike), Tom Sturridge (Orphans) and Tracy Letts (Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?).

Besides Tom Hanks's nomination, the play, written by the late Nora Ephron, got five other nominations at the Tony Awards:
  • Best Play
  • Best Performance By An Actor In A Featured Role In A Play (Courtney B. Vance)
  • Best Director Of A Play (George C. Wolfe)
  • Best Scenic Design Of A Play (David Rockwell)
  • Best Lighting Design Of A Play (Jules Fisher & Peggy Eisenhauer)

You can read an interview made by The Wall Street Journal in our articles, in which Tom Hanks talks about this first Tony nod and his experience on Broadway.
The ceremony will be broadcast on CBS from Radio City Music Hall on June 9.

In addition to his nominations for a Outer Critics Circle Award, a Drama League Award and a Tony Award, Tom Hanks is also nominated for a Drama Desk Awards in the category Outstanding Actor. The accolades will be presented during a ceremony at The Town Hall in New York City on May 19, 2013.

You can check our Awards page to see all these nominations and our Calendar to see the dates of the different ceremonies.
