Videos from the CERN & news

February 18, 2009

Four videos about Angels & Demons have been added in the documentaries. Two of them are about Tom Hanks, Ron Howard and Ayelet Zurer's visit to the CERN, and the others are some cast interviews of Tom Hanks, Ewan McGregor, Stellan Skarsgard, Ayelet Zurer, Pierfrancesco Favino and director Ron Howard.

During the press conference held at the CERN, Tom Hanks accepted to restart the Large Hadron Collide later this year.

“I found out today that if I stuck my hand into the particle accelerator, it would disappear, and antimatter would be created. I’m willing to sacrifice my hand for science by sticking it in the LHC.”

Tom Hanks also offered a more personal theory on how science and religion can gracefully coexist.

“Mystery is what I think is the Grand Unifying Theory of all mankind. When I go to church I ponder the mystery. I think CERN is a beautiful place–they’re wresting with a mystery. Both answer both in ways that are different.”

Steve Myers, the lab’s director of accelerators and technology, seized on Hanks’ tongue-in-cheek offer to lend a hand at the LHC and asked him to return to restart the accelerator this fall. Tom Hanks said yes, but scientists will have to wait to see whether the as-yet-unknown restart date collides with availability in the star’s schedule.

CERN's head of communications, James Gillies, confirmed that the facility would be delighted to have Hanks there to restart the collider, which organisers hope will take place in June. (Source)
