Tom Hanks & Meryl Streep to co-star ?
February 16, 2012
Will Tom Hanks and Meryl Streep co-star in an upcoming movie ? Maybe. The Walt Disney Company is reportedly in final negotiations over the rights to Saving Mr Banks, the scripted saga of how Walt Disney persuaded Australian author P.L. Travers to sell him the rights to make a film out of Mary Poppins. That courtship took 14 years.
P.L. Travers first published Mary Poppins, which tells the story of the Banks family and their enchanting nanny, in 1934 and went on to write seven sequels. Because of her treatment during filming, and the addition of an animated sequence, Travers refused to sell Disney the rights to any of the other Poppins properties after the original 1964 film.
There have been rumors of Tom Hanks and Meryl Streep being considered to portray Disney and Travers, respectively. Kelly Marcel penned the screenplay, which is currently on the industry's Black List, an annual list of the most well-liked screenplays as voted on by of Hollywood executives, agency professionals, and high-level assistants, but that have yet to be picked up for production. According to screenwriter Kelly Marcel, the script covers “a three-week period in which Disney invited [Travers] to L.A. to try and get the script for ‘Mary Poppins’ right”.
Disney is expected to make an official announcement about the project once negotiations over Marcel's script have been finalized.
