Saving Mr Banks : Tom Hanks officially in talks to play Disney
April 10, 2012
On February 16, we told you that there were rumors of Tom Hanks and Meryl Streep being approached to co-star in Saving Mr Banks. Variety confirmed that Tom Hanks is now officially in talks to play Walt Disney. Unfortunately, the first collaboration with Meryl Streep will not happen this time, as Emma Thompson is negotiating to play P.L. Travers.
John Lee Hancock (The Blind Side) has signed on to direct the script written by Kelly Marcel.
The movie will tell the scripted saga of how Walt Disney persuaded Australian author P.L. Travers to sell him the rights to make a film out of Mary Poppins. That courtship took 14 years.
P.L. Travers first published Mary Poppins, which tells the story of the Banks family and their enchanting nanny, in 1934 and went on to write seven sequels. Because of her treatment during filming, and the addition of an animated sequence, Travers refused to sell Disney the rights to any of the other Poppins properties after the original 1964 film.
