Tom Hanks meets Mia, a little girl fighting Neurofibromatosis

June 30, 2012

Tom Hanks and the crew working on the movie Captain Phillips took some time off from the set to meet Mia, a little girl who is fighting an incurable disease Neurofibromatosis, a genetic disorder of the nervous system which causes tumors to grow on a nerve anywhere in the body, at any time.

Mia was so funny and he was so nice. She said "You don't look like Woody". Tom grabbed her shoulder and said "Well, Mia. You got to close your eyes..." Then he started doing lines from Toy Story. It was great. :-)

You can see the photos of Mia meeting Tom Hanks and other actors from the movie on the Facebook page Can Mia get 1,000,000 fans to raise awarness of Neurofibromatosis?

Danny Rashkind, June 30, 2012

Thank you so much Tom for helping Mia and I raise awareness, and taking to leave the set and make our day.

Marianne Mick, June 30, 2012

What a wonderful way to get a little more NF awareness! Good job Mia (and Danny). Thank you Mr. Hanks for giving Mia memories to last a life time. Not all celebrities embrace the characters they play for a younger audience in that way.

Angie, June 30, 2012

Mr. Hanks, you are a class act. I too have a son Mia's age fighting Neurofibromatosis, Type 1, just like Mia. We spend hours at Children's Hospital of the Kings Daughters in Norfolk watching the growth of his optic glioma tumor and treating other effects of the disease. We appreciate your willingness to raise awareness of this disease. This is not the first story I've heard about your grace and class since you've been here in VA. Thank you again!!

Cindy Mac, June 30, 2012

That was so awesome of Tom and the other cast and crew members to spend some time with a young fan. I would have loved to hear him "run lines" as Woody. Good job, Danny!

Karen Sezek, June 30, 2012

Mr. Hanks...or "Tom" as Mia now calls you, Thank you, it's that simple. When all the news of you filming in Hampton Roads is over, when all of the cameras are gone, when all of that vanishes...Mia, her Dad and all of those that deal with NF will still be here. Mia, talks about you as though she truly knows you and is very proud of the fact that "yeah, I met Tom Hanks"! I hope that you may find the time to look up some info on Mia and NF. We need all the help we can get to spread the word. Her dad will be running the rock n roll half marathon here in Va Beach in Septemeber to raise awareness for NF...How cool would it be to cross the finish line with Mia? :-)
