In the Garden of the Beasts : Michel Hazanavicius to direct ?

September 16, 2012

In November 2011, Universal and Tom Hanks's production company, Playtone, had optioned the rights to Erik Larson's nonfiction bestseller In the Garden of Beasts : Love, Terror and an American Family in Hitler’s Berlin, which was published in May 2011. Tom Hanks is also interested in playing the main part, that of William Dodd, the United States' reluctant and mild-mannered ambassador to Berlin in 1933.

We learn now that Michel Hazanavicius, the French Oscar-winning director of The Artist, is in talks to direct, while Natalie Portman is reportedly being courted to play William Dodd's (Tom Hanks) daughter.

The book tells the true story of William Dodd, a mild-mannered Chicago professor who becomes America’s first ambassador to Hitler’s Germany before the Nazis began to assert an iron grip across Europe. His daughter Martha, a vivacious socialite had romantic affairs with a Gestapo official and a Soviet spy. Dodd and his family at first naively navigated life in Nazi Germany (Dodd’s daughter was excited when Hitler kissed her hand) but they slowly gained awareness of the mounting brutality around them. Dodd gradually realized the atrocities that were being conducted around him as World War II escalated.
