Saving Mr Banks : production has begun
September 22, 2012
Disney began production on Saving Mr Banks on September 19. The filming will entirely take place in the Los Angeles area, with key locations to include Disneyland in Anaheim and the Disney Studios in Burbank. Filming should conclude around Thanksgiving, 2012, with no specific 2013 release date yet set.
Tom Hanks will be portraying Walt Disney, who has never been depicted in a dramatic movie before. Emma Thompson assumes the role of P.L. Travers. Colin Farrell co-stars as Travers’s father while Ruth Wilson will play her mother. Rachel Griffiths will take on the role of Travers’ Aunt Ellie who was the inspiration behind the title character of the novel. John Lee Hancock will direct the project written by Kelly Marcel, based on a story by Sue Smith and Kelly Marcel.
The movie will tell the scripted saga of how Walt Disney persuaded Australian author P.L. Travers to sell him the rights to make a film out of Mary Poppins. That courtship took 14 years.
P.L. Travers first published Mary Poppins, which tells the story of the Banks family and their enchanting nanny, in 1934 and went on to write seven sequels. Because of her treatment during filming, and the addition of an animated sequence, Travers refused to sell Disney the rights to any of the other Poppins properties after the original 1964 film.
