December 02, 2012

Tom Hanks, Quincy Jones, Quentin Tarantino, George Lucas, Steven Spielberg, Warren Beatty, Kirk Douglas, Amy Adams and Richard Gere were among the A-listers who came to the film Academy's Governors Awards last night to honor filmmakers Jeffrey Katzenberg, D. A. Pennebaker, George Stevens Jr. and Hal Needham who were this year's honorees.

Tom Hanks went up on stage to introduce the Hersholt Humanitarian Award to Jeffrey Katzenberg. What started as a humorous speech ended as a moving tribute when Tom Hanks reminded the audience of Jeffrey Katzenberg's efforts after the events of 9/11. You can watch the 5-minute speech in our videos.

Octogenarians Pennebaker, Stevens and Needham received honorary Oscars for their distinguished careers and Katzenberg was recognized with the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award during this ceremony established four years ago by the Academy. Portions of the untelevised event may be included in the February 24 Academy Awards telecast.
